Game Night & Classic Who Screening – “The Curse of Fenric”

Its time for another TRTLoOC Game Night & Screening!  This time we will be viewing the classic 7th Doctor story, “The Curse of Fenric.”

“The Doctor and Ace are put to the ultimate test when the TARDIS materializes in Second World War England at a top-secret naval base. The army church, built on Viking graves, bears inscriptions calling for the wolves of Fenric to return for their treasure. Thereafter, evil will reign. Even as the Doctor translates the inscription, hideous corpses rise up from the sea, and the evil Fenric is now free to summon his wolves to a killing rampage.”

Have a favorite tabletop game?  Bring it!  We’ll have several games there – Chrononauts, Munchkin, Star Fluxx, Pandemic, etc – but the more games we have, the better the night will be!

Schedule of Events:
  – 4pm-5pm: Welcome / Sign-in
  – 5pm-8pm: Board Game Spectacular!
  – 8pm-10pm: Classic Who Screening – “The Curse of Fenric”

Bring $5 cash to the event to help cover the cost of food and party supplies. We’ll provide dinner and munchies as well as non-alcoholic drinks. Alcohol is always welcome – nay encouraged – but please BYOB.

We’ll announce the menu via email prior to the event, but will have items for both meat-eaters and vegetarians alike.

Please remember that parking is limited around the UC-Irvine campus, so carpooling is encouraged. If you are interested in being a carpoolee or carpooler, let others know by posting in the comments below.

New Member Meet & Greet

Are you new to the Real Time Lords? Have you been “lurking” for a while, but have been too nervous or busy to attend our events?

The New Member Meet & Greet is for you!

We’re now hosting regular ‘Meet and Greet’ events to give new(er) members or those who haven’t been to many of our events the opportunity to get your feet wet, without the fear of noisy bars or long waitlists. :-)

At these events, you’ll learn more about other members, their fandom and our group as a whole over a quiet, casual dinner in a low-key environment.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:

For the Meet & Greet events, we ask that:

• All new and infrequent members try to attend at least one Meet & Greet after joining the group. (It’s not mandatory, but it will be a really good way to break the ice and learn more about the Real Time Lords and our members!)

• Core/Active members give new and newish members first dibs on RSVPs

• Core/Active members can attend, but only if the event is less than 50% full one week from the event date. I will send out an email a week prior to the event encouraging RSVPs.

• Due to the size of our group, individual checks at dinner may not be an option. PLEASE BRING CASH TO PAY FOR YOUR PART OF THE MEAL!

For questions, call Amanda at 949-466-8470, or contact me through Meetup.

We’ll see you there!

Weekend Kaffeeklatsch – Religion in Doctor Who

What is a Kaffeeklatsch? Simply put, it’s a casual discussion group that meets over coffee – or in this month’s case, coffee and video. Think of it as a more caffeinated book club that doesn’t just focus on books.

Our July topic will focus on the question: Is there room for God in the TARDIS? For a show that normally remains secular, how does Doctor Who present itself in a world in which religious beliefs are ever-present in most people’s daily lives? As a way to facilitate our discussion of how Doctor Who has dealt with matters of faith through its long history, we’ll be watching “The Satan Pit” and “The God Complex.” (NOTE: “The Satan Pit” is the second half of a story that begins with “The Impossible Planet.” We won’t be watching “Impossible Planet,” so if you haven’t seen it yet, watch it before our meetup – as homework, that’s not so bad.)

The meetup is limited to 15 members.  Spots are first come, first serve, and the location will be e-mailed to attendees prior to the event. (There will be a waitlist, so put your name on that when it starts – the RSVPs always change close to the event)  All TRTLoOC rules will be in effect for this event.  See you there!

Screening: Animated Who!

This month our theme screening is Animated Doctor Who (and no, the picture above is NOT one of the shows we’ll be watching…but wouldn’t it be great if it were?)

First up is “The Infinite Quest” featuring the voices of David Tennant and Freema Agyeman as the Doctor and Martha as they follow a trail of clues to find the location of the legendary lost spaceship, the Infinite.

Next is “Scream of the Shalka” featuring Richard E. Grant as the Doctor, as he helps UNIT face an invasion from the Shalka (who apparently like to scream…)

Next is “Dreamland” featuring the voices of David Tennant, Georgia Moffett and David Warner, as the Doctor faces the monstrous Viperox at Area 51.

And definitely other surprises…

AND our TRTLoOC After Dark will feature a Star Wars/DC Comics Robot Chicken marathon!

It’s going to be a packed program, so we’re starting the screening at 4:30 SHARP!

What you should know about this screening:

• Bring $5 for pizza and drinks/snacks/desserts to share

• We have cats. They will be locked up, but if you have allergies, beware.

No-show/late drop out rules for screenings is in effect (late drop outs will be suspended from attending the next screening

See you there!

Monthly Kaffeeklatsch: Last Christmas

Last Christmas was a unique episode with it’s well meshed blend of Inception, Aliens and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.

Let’s get together and discuss this episode and it’s various twists!  What did you love? What did you hate? What would you have changed? Bring all of your ideas!

The organizers will cover the Kaffeeklatsch rules at the event, and general TRTLoOC group rules apply. We may break into smaller groups depending on how many people sign up.

Craft Day: Amigurumi -OR- Mini Painting

VOTE IN THE COMMENTS BELOW!

For our next Craft Day event, YOU get to choose what project we’ll take on!

Choice 1: Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small animals, characters or anthropomorphic items (like food). If you select this choice, we will work on the “Mini Doctor Whos” project found on this page: http://pixelatedmushroom.blogspot.com.au/p/knittingcrochet-patterns.html#drwho. You will need to supply your own yarn & crochet needle. I will provide instruction.

Choice 2: Mini Painting is the art of hand-painting miniature plastic, resin or metal figures, often for table-top games that use them. The goal is to make them look as realistic as possible. If you choose this project, we will practice on metal figures and brushes that I will supply (for a $10 materials fee). I will supply the paints and other materials and provide instruction.  If you’d like to purchase your own figures or supplies, I recommend Brookhurst Hobbies in Garden Grove, but any comic/hobby store will usually cater to mini painters.  Crooked Dice in the UK produces a fun line of minis for the Doctor Who Miniatures Game.
