BBQ and Screening

Combining the end of Summer with our continuing journey through “Old Who” I thought we might look at the Second Doctor Patrick Troughton this month and the episode “Tomb of the Cybermen.” and reserve the BBQ grills at the Irvine Duck Club.

“Troughton may well have been the best Doctor of them all — but most of his best stories were junked, and we only have snippets. The exception is this Hammer Horror-tinged adventure, where an archeological expedition travels to the planet of the Cybermen to find out why they died out. The expedition finds the Cybermen’s final resting place and — not really a spoiler — the Cybermen aren’t quite so dead. This story features the Cybermen at their creepiest and most menacing. But also, Patrick Troughton is a revelation in this story: wily and cunning and sweet and mocking.”–Gizmodo http://goo.gl/JdLhWq

I will bring a Brita, plates, cups, utensils, condiments and an ice machine. As the description says we will have access to the BBQ so grilling foods are welcome. If there is time and a need (i.e. if I am not too busy hosting) I may be able to make a barely edible pizza or two. I’ve also been thinking of bringing my bread machine and making a mediocre cheesecake and/or pound cake (don’t get your hopes up–I won’t be putting The Cheescake Factory or Sara Lee out of business). Please post it in the comments what you are bringing to share so we have an idea of what’s coming.

Following directions from Google or other mapping websites can be misleading, I would reccomend confirming whatever directions you get against Irvine Ranch’s PDF map, you can find here: https://goo.gl/GSJ6ze

I may be there as early as 4 PM setting up, making ice, testing audio video equipment. I will announce in the comments if I have arrived early. If people want to come in and watch videos (eg. a marathon of Mr. Robot or Orphan Black, Gallifrey One panels or Comic-Con pictures) or just hangout; you are welcome to do so though please be aware I will be busy with setup at least initially.

Big Finish Club – Genocide Machine. Fires of Vulcan, & Shadow of the Scourge

Sad about no new Who for a while? Join us for our monthly Big Finish Audio Club!

This month we’ll be discussing “The Genocide Machine,” “The Fires of Vulcan,” & “The Shadow of the Scourge” – all 7th Doctor stories.

Below are the links to Big Finish.

“The Genocide Machine” – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-genocide-machine-625?range=111

The library on Kar-Charrat is one of the wonders of the Universe. It is also hidden from all but a few select species. The Doctor and Ace discover that the librarians have found a new way of storing data – a wetworks facility – but the machine has attracted unwanted attention, and the Doctor soon finds himself pitted against his oldest and deadliest enemies – the Daleks!

“The Fires of Vulcan” – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-fires-of-vulcan-635

Two thousand years ago, a volcanic eruption wiped the Roman city of Pompeii from the face of the Earth. It also buried the Doctor’s TARDIS…

Arriving in Pompeii one day before the disaster, the Doctor and Mel find themselves separated from their ship and entangled in local politics. As time runs out, they fight to escape from the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. But how can they succeed when history itself is working against them?

“The Shadow of the Scourge” – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-shadow-of-the-scourge-636

The Pinehill Crest Hotel in Kent is host to three very different events: a cross-stitch convention, an experiment in time travel and… the summoning of the scourge.

The Doctor, Bernice and Ace find themselves dealing with a dead body that’s come back to life, a mystical symbol that possesses its host, and a threat from another universe that’s ready for every trick the Doctor’s got up his sleeve.

This time, has the Doctor gone too far?

August Screening

The Duck Club is closed for August but we have the Community Meeting Room at Irvine Ranch Water District. Full on potlucks are not allowed it but we are allowed to bring drinks and finger foods (chips and the like). Concerns are for the persistence of food smells and stains on the carpet. As of now there are no plans for what is to be played. Last month we watched “An Unearthly Child” and “Genesis of the Daleks” just based on popular requests. Maybe we can do the same again or roll dice D&D style.

Screening: Star Trek Beyond

Join us for Star Trek Beyond, the newest NuTrek! After an extremely dubious first trailer, the first reviews of early screenings have been fantastic! The screening we’ll be seeing is the 2:40 p.m. digital (not 3-D) screening, but we’ll be meeting in line at 2 p.m. Afterward we can grab dinner at one of the eateries in Bella Terra. The link for the Fandango tickets is here: https://tickets.fandango.com/transaction/ticketing/express/ticketboxoffice.aspx?row_count=136872944&mid=188462&tid=AATTF

You have to select a particular seat – I’ve started us at K-11, so try for something close to that.

See you there!

Big Finish Club – Storm Warning, Sword of Orion, & The Stones of Venice

After watching the Night of the Doctor, did you wonder who Charley was? The 8th Doctor mentioned her first, as one of his companions. This month we’ll be beginning the 8th Doctor’s main range audios and meet Charley and discussing “Storm Warning,” “Sword of Orion,” and “The Stones of Venice.”

Haven’t been attending and wonder if you can jump in? Of course! Still worried? Message me!

Below are the links to Big Finish.

Storm Warning – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/storm-warning-641

October, 1930. His Majesty’s Airship, the R101, sets off on her maiden voyage to the farthest-flung reaches of the British Empire, carrying the brightest lights of the Imperial fleet. Carrying the hopes and dreams of a breathless nation.

Not to mention a ruthless spy with a top-secret mission, a mysterious passenger who appears nowhere on the crew list, a would-be adventuress destined for the Singapore Hilton… and a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey.

There’s a storm coming. There’s something unspeakable, something with wings, crawling across the stern. Thousands of feet high in the blackening sky, the crew of the R101 brace themselves. When the storm breaks, their lives won’t be all that’s at stake…

The future of the galaxy will be hanging by a thread.

Sword of Orion –

https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/sword-of-orion-642

The human race is locked in deadly combat with the ‘Android Hordes’ in the Orion System. Light years from the front line, the Doctor and Charley arrive to sample the dubious delights of a galactic backwater, little suspecting that the consequences of the Orion War might reach them there. But High Command’s lust for victory knows no bounds.

Trapped aboard a mysterious derelict star destroyer, the Doctor and Charley find themselves facing summary execution. But this is only the beginning of their troubles. The real danger has yet to awaken.

Until, somewhere in the dark recesses of the Garazone System, the Cybermen receive the signal for reactivation…

The Stones of Venice –

https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-stones-of-venice-643

The Doctor and Charley decide to take a well-deserved break from the monotony of being chased, shot at and generally suffering anti-social behaviour at the hands of others. And so they end up in Venice, well into Charley’s future, as the great city prepares to sink beneath the water for the last time…

Which would be a momentous, if rather dispiriting, event to witness in itself. However, the machinations of a love-sick aristocrat, a proud art historian and a rabid High Priest of a really quite dodgy cult combine to make Venice’s swansong a night to remember. And then there’s the rebellion by the web-footed amphibious underclass, the mystery of a disappearing corpse and the truth behind a curse going back further than curses usually do. The Doctor and Charley are forced to wonder just what they have got themselves involved with this time…

Saturday morning videos

This Saturday morning video event will be hosted by Ming, who will be playing a variety of videos (Gallifrey One videos, shows, movies, cartoons?) from his library. We can’t give you a list yet, but it’s a fun way to spend a Saturday!! Please bring your own food, snacks and drinks to share!

Big Finish Club – The Fearmonger, The Marian Conspiracy, & Human Resources

Sad about no new Who for a while? Join us for our monthly Big Finish Audio Club!

This month we’ll be discussing “The Fearmonger,” “The Marian Conspiracy,” and “Human Resources” Parts 1 & 2.

Haven’t been attending and wonder if you can jump in? Of course! Half the stories are stand-alones, and the other half are only partly related to previous stories – only through the story of Lucie Miller, the companion. Still worried? Message me!

Below are the links to Big Finish.

“The Fearmonger” – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-fearmonger-623

One would-be assassin is in a mental ward. Another’s on the run. Their intended victim is stirring up the mobs. Terrorists are planning a strike of their own. A talk-radio host is loving every minute of it. A Whitehall insider whispers about a mysterious UN operative, with a hidden agenda. Everyone’s got someone they want to be afraid of. It’ll only take a little push for the situation to erupt – and something is doing the pushing. But you can trust the Doctor to put things right. Can’t you?

“The Marian Conspiracy” – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-marian-conspiracy-624

Tracking a nexus point in time, the Doctor meets Dr Evelyn Smythe, a history lecturer whose own history seems to be rapidly vanishing.

The Doctor must travel back to Tudor times to stabilise the nexus and save Evelyn’s life. But there he meets the Queen of England and use all his skills of diplomacy to avoid ending up on the headman’s block…

“Human Resources” Part 1 – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/human-resources-part-1-521

Lucie Miller’s been headhunted to join the staff of Hulbert Logistics, a respectable blue-chip firm in Telford. Great prospects, competitive salary – you don’t have to be mad to work here! But wasn’t she made for better things, like travelling by TARDIS through time and space? The Doctor, meanwhile, has been fired – into a confrontation with the most terrifying of enemies…

“Human Resources” Part 2 – https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/human-resources-part-2-522

Business as usual? Not at Hulbert Logistics, where staff are facing a menace far worse than the prospect of the office Christmas party. Lucie’s made some new friends and the Doctor’s met some old enemies. But just who will become the Headhunter’s new apprentice? Welcome to the job interview from hell.
